Our Story

Where it all began

In 2023 our founder, Michael Lambert, was elected to the committee of the Austin 7 Club.  As part of his role, Michael saw an opportunity to streamline the management of the club calendar for use in Lightshaft, the club’s newsletter, and on the club website.

Michael searched for a calendar system that would suit the club’s needs, but ultimately couldn’t find one.  With a background in web development and software as a service, Michael decided to set-up a system that would solve this problem.

History

It wasn't so simple

After setting up an initial version of the site, Michael discovered that the concept was good and people were interested, but the management and manual work required would exceed his capacity.  The site was put on the back-burner.

In late 2025, Michael was involved in the formation of Historic Motorsport Promoters.  As Michael’s management of the Austin 7 Club calendar had increased, he also took on the responsibility of managing the Historic Motorsport Promoters calendar.

With Michael having to maintain 2 calendars with some overlap he began to reinvest in Car-Club.Events.  A new template was found with additional event management functionality, and sub-site functionality was implemented to assist with internal club events.

Regions

How to divide the world

The original concept for Car-Club.Events was to focus on events in the Australian state of Victoria.  With this area in mind, research was undertaken to determine a suitable way to divide the state.

Consideration was given to electoral maps but they focussed too much on population numbers and have a history of being changed regularly.  Statistical maps were looked at, but these maps had some geographically large areas that would mean travel distances within a region may not be feasible.  Tourism maps were close to what was needed, but ultimately some tourist regions are far too small when an overlay of car club events is added.  There was a thought of creating a custom map, but this seemed like misplaced energy and was prone to confusing people who were used to other map sources.

Finally, it was decided that the maps used by the Victorian Department of Education was the most appropriate; with a balance between geographic area and population centres.  Although some areas on the map (such as the Wimmera South West and Outer Gippsland areas) are still geographically too large, it was decided that this compromise was appropriate.
